Named in 1978 by G.Y. Chao, P.R. Mainwaring and J. Baker for Joseph Donnay (Oreye, Liège province, Belgium, June 6 1902 - Mont Saint Hilaire, Quebec, August 8 1994) and his wife Gabrielle (Gai) Donnay-Hamburger. Was professor at the Johns Hopkins university.
