The mother-of-pearl is formed from aragonite mixed with conchylin. Some non-pearly brown, gray or black pearls like the famous 'Hope' pearl have an orange-red fluorescence (see bibliography: The Journal ot Gemmology, vol. 26-1, 1998). The peculiarity of Pteria Sterna pearls from the Sea of Cortez and of the mother-of-pearl of their shell is the pink-red fluorescence due to porphyrin under ultraviolet radiation at 365 nm (UVL). They are inert under short wavelength ultraviolet radiation (254 nm, UVC). (see bibliography: paper of 'Laboratoire français de gemmologie')
